Your Teacher

Meet Joy Dirks

Joy is a Surrey based teacher who loves helping newcomers feel at home in Canada. Her classes are patient, clear and encouraging. She explains big ideas in plain language and makes sure every student leaves each session knowing more than when they arrived.

Joy teaches one thing and teaches it well: the content of the Discover Canada study guide. She does not give immigration advice and she does not handle citizenship applications. Her single focus is helping you understand Canada well enough to pass your test, and to feel proud while you do it.

  • Based in Surrey, British Columbia
  • Teaching students in every province and territory, online
  • Focused entirely on the Discover Canada study guide

Know Before You Go

About the official test

  • The test has 30 multiple choice questions, and every question comes from the Discover Canada guide.
  • You need a score of at least 75 percent to pass.
  • Most applicants between the ages of 18 and 54 take the test as part of a citizenship application.
  • To apply for citizenship, you must be a permanent resident and have lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days in the five years before you apply.
  • The study guide is free. You can read it or download it on the Government of Canada website.

Go straight to the source

Eligibility rules, application forms and the free study guide all live on the official Government of Canada citizenship pages. Read them alongside your classes so nothing about the process surprises you.

Good Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is this the official citizenship test?

No. This is a preparation course. The official test is run by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada after you apply for citizenship. This course teaches you the study guide the test is based on, so you arrive prepared and calm.

What book is the course based on?

Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship. It is the official study guide, and it is the only book the test questions come from. Every session in both programs follows it.

How does the Online Program work?

Pay once and you receive an access code. Open the course on any phone, tablet or computer, type the code once, and every chapter unlocks. Each chapter has short lessons, flashcards and a quiz, and a Listen button reads the lessons aloud. Your progress saves on your device, so you can stop and return any time.

What if my test date is very soon?

Book one on one tutoring. Joy will focus your time on the areas that matter most for your test date, so every hour counts.

What if my English is not strong yet?

You are welcome here. Joy teaches in clear, plain language and checks understanding as she goes. Many students join while their English is still growing, and they do well.

How do I book and pay?

The Online Program is paid online by card, and your access code arrives right away. For tutoring and organization classes, send the form below or write to Joy by email. She confirms your times first and sends payment details after.

Can Joy teach a class for our organization?

Yes. Joy facilitates live citizenship classes for immigration organizations, law firms, settlement agencies and community groups, online across Canada or in person in the Lower Mainland. Send the form below with a few details about your group and she will reply with a quote.

Does Joy help with citizenship applications?

No. Joy is a teacher, not an immigration consultant. Her services cover teaching and reviewing the Discover Canada material only. For help with an application, speak with a licensed immigration consultant or a lawyer.
